About Tsavo Park |
 |
Comprised of Tsavo East, Tsavo West and Chyulu Hills, Tsavo National Park is the
largest game sanctuary in the world. It also features the Yatta Plateau, which has the
worlds largest lava flow. This park is renown for its large herds of Elephant and
the famous man eating lion as well as other species of wildlife such as the
Hirola Antelope, Leopard, Buffalo and Rhino to name but a few. Other features of the vast
park are the Chaimu volcanic craters, Chyulu Hills, Shetani lava flows and Mzima Springs.
This park has attracted millions of visitors since
its creation in 1948. Tsavo is located 240km from Nairobi, just off the main
Nairobi-Mombassa Highway. This huge reserve boasts a tremendous altitude range (500-6000
feet above sea level), providing diverse habitats. Rivers, forests, lakes, wooded
grasslands and mountains each host a unique set of animal life.
Besides geographical features and wildlife, the
park has a rich history. Tsavo can be seen in the film "The Ghost and the
Darkness" which portrays the story of the Man Eaters of Tsavo. At the
turn of the century, man-eating lions preyed on workers building the Uganda Railway making
the area rather infamous.
Tsavo National Park is so sprawling and so
diverse, that tourists return again and again to absorb all the park has to offer. |
