About Lake Naivasha |
 |
Lake Naivasha is situated 100km away from Nairobi and is regarded as a
birdwatchers haven. There are over 450 species recorded in this area and from October to
March, migratory birds increase this population. In the water, colonies of Hippo are also
seen and heard. Crescent Island is located in Lake Naivasha and is said to be one of the
few places in Africa where humans and animals mingle freely. There are no fences and no
predators, which makes walking among Zebra, Wildebeest, Gazelle and Giraffe a very
exhilarating and memorable experience.
Between 1937 and 1950, "the flying boat"
would take off in London and land on Lake Naivasha to bring visitors destined for Nairobi.
Now, the lake, which boasts a private yacht club, has become a popular recreational area
for Kenyans. Visitors can also rent recreational and fishing boats from the local hotels.
The fertile soil surrounding Lake Naivasha makes it the perfect area to grow fruits and
vegetables, and more recently, wine grapes.
Besides the fascinating biology, botany and
geography, Lake Naviasha boasts an interesting geology as well. This freshwater lake has
no visible inlet or outlet. Geologists believe that the lake is fed through underground
tributaries from the Gilgil and Malewa rivers to the north.
Lake Naivasha is an excellent destination for
birdwatchers, animal lovers, and scientists. |
